En la sesión de julio del ECOSOC se discutió el informe del Comité para ONG en el que se proponía la concesión de estatus consultivo a 112 ONG, entre las que se incluía la nuestra.  ECOSOC adoptó sin votación el informe y decidió concedernos el estatus consultivo especial, otorgado a organizaciones que tienen una especial competencia en un área o tema de trabajo determinados relacionados con el mandato del Consejo.

18ª sesión del Consejo de Derechos Humanos

La 18ª sesión del Consejo de Derechos Humanos se celebrará en Ginebra (Suiza) en la sede de las Naciones Unidas del 12 al 30 de septiembre de 2011. Almáciga apoyará la participación de representantes indígenas de la Federación por la Autodeterminación de los Pueblos Indígenas de Paraguay (FAPI).

En el marco de las discusiones sobre el informe que está ultimando el Mecanismo de Expertos sobre los Derechos de los Pueblos Indígenas (MEDPI) sobre el tema de "participación de los pueblos indígenas en la toma de decisiones", las organizaciones IWGIA, Centro para el Desarrollo de los Derechos de las Minorías, Kenia (CEMIRIDE), Minority Rights Group International (MRG) y Consejo para el Bienestar Endorois (Endorois Welfare Council) presentaron la declaración que les adjuntamos.

In its report, the PFII recommends ECOSOC to approve the celebration of an experts meeting next year, on the issue “struggling violence against indigenous girls and women”; to approve next period of sessions from 7 to 18 May in New York and to adopt the programme proposed for that session, that will have as special issue: “the discovery doctrine: its lasting repercussion in indigenous peoples and the right to receive fair amends for the conquests in the past” (articles 28 and 37 of the Statement).

From 17 to 19 June 2011, it was held in Jokkmokk, Sámpi (sami territory) the Terra Madre Indígena meeting. The international movement Terra Madre and Slow Food is addressed to promote the respect towards the sustainable food production systems, including traditional uses.

The Expert Mechanism on the Rights of Indigenous People of the United Nations´ Human Rights Council is going hold its fourth session from 11 to 15 July 2011, in the XX Room of the United Nations Palace in Geneva, Switzerland. The documents and information about the session will be available here.
This year it will be presented the final version of the report on the right of the indigenous peoples to participate in the decision making procedure. At the moment, the document is available just in English.

Presentations and support materials

Almáciga makes available for indigenous and support organizations presentations and materials that can be used in training and education on the rights of indigenous peoples. We hope they are useful. You can access the documents through the links included in the bottom of this article.

Thanks to the support of the Human Rights Office of the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Almáciga created a CD compiling working materials and documents for training on the human rights system and the rights of indigenous peoples. The documents can be accessed in Spanish only
